Overview
The Bachelor’s Program in Indonesian Language Education (B.A. ILE) is one of the study programs under the Indonesian Department, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Negeri Malang. The Indonesian Department itself was born in 1954 with the birth of Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru (PTPG). In its earliest days, this department was known by the name Jurusan Bahasa and Sastra Indonesia (Indonesian Language and Literature Department), which then changed into Jurusan Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language Department) in 1963 and did once more into Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia (Indonesian Language and Literature Education Department) two decades later (1983). With the expansion of IKIP Malang’s mandate into Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), this department’s name went through the latest alteration into Jurusan Sastra Indonesia (Indonesian Department) and came with two study programs. Currently, this department has six study programs, namely (1) B.A. in Indonesian Language Education, (2) B.A. in Indonesian Language and Literature, (3) M.A. in Indonesian Language Education, (4) Ph.D. in Indonesian Language Education, (5) B.A. in Library Science, and (6) Diploma (D3) in Librarianship.
The B.A. in ILE is a program that directs students to gain an adequate qualification as prospective Indonesian Language teachers. In response to the issuance of the Freedom to Learn – Independent Campus policy by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the program curriculum is outcome-based and aimed to develop capabilities using a life-based learning approach and transdisciplinary management. To maximize students’ capability attainment, the study program offers four elective course packages and provides opportunities for students to attend lectures on a transdisciplinary basis in other study programs or universities that are aligned to their interests. The life-based learning approach is carried out through problem- and project-based learning activities in collaboration with stakeholders. To support effective instructional delivery, Universitas Negeri Malang provides a learning management system called SIPEJAR (Sistem Pengelolaan Pembelajaran). With this system, class sessions may be carried out offline and online (synchronously and non-synchronously), through either blended learning or flipped learning mechanism. The arrangement of the curricular structure is done in such a way that students may graduate in seven semesters.
